What is a Cashback Website?
Cashback websites are a great money-saving aid, offering shoppers a way to earn money or discounts just by doing their regular online shopping. So, they list out a range of products – fashion, homeware, electrics, toys and so on – and allow you to register with them. Once you have registered, you can shop away at the sites they list and earn points or earn cashback on those sites.
For instance, you might find a cashback site that lists among other companies Dixons the electrical supplier. You register with the cashback site and start buying your regular items from Dixons – and earn cashback for doing so!
Some cashback sites offer rewards for areas other than product purchases – you can earn for things like taking part in a free trial.
How can I Apply?
Have a look around the various cashback websites on offer (you can use our simple comparison page dedicated to cashback sites). See what products and services they list – and once you have found some which you like, you can register an account with them.
This is usually free (although some sites do charge for this) and will give you a login and password system – so every time you visit the cashback site you can log in and get shopping while earning points!
How do I shop?
Once you have registered with a cashback site, you can browse around the site to see what is on offer. If you want to come back later, you can simply log out of your personal account and log back in again when you return.
You might see 11% for shopping at Matalan, or up to £80 for using EDF Energy. You might even earn money for taking a free trial for viewing your credit file!
Take your time and once you have seen offers which appeal to you, just click on the relevant 'continue' button. Because you are logged in, your points will be collected when you make your purchase or sign up for a free trial.
Overall it is very similar to any regular online shopping, only that your starting point comes from one website which lists all of your other usual sites (Sainsburys, lastminute.com, Scottish Power, InterFlora....the list goes on)!
How do I get my Cash or Rewards?
Depending on the cashback website, you can earn cashback or reward points – or both. So, with your registered account you shop and partake in the services which appeal to you that they list.
- Request Cash
Once you have gathered a certain amount of points, you can either request cashback – in other words, a cash payment from the cashback site. This is usually paid via bank transfer.
- Request Vouchers
Alternatively, you might be able to request to be paid in vouchers. These vouchers are usually sent as an email attachment to you and will include a code. Once this code is entered in at some online shops, this makes a reduction to the overall cost.
What are the Benefits of Cashback Sites?
There are many great benefits of using a cashback site. Here are some:
- Easy to use, free to register
- Earn cash/vouchers just for doing the regular shop
- Easy to request cashback/vouchers
- No obligation – can browse
So, by just doing your normal shopping you can earn money – a great way to save and cut costs!
Are there and Disadvantages?
It is not easy to find drawbacks to cashback websites. However, there are one or two things to consider:
- If your account is dormant, the site can choose to terminate it. However, they only ask that you log in around every 6 months – you don't even have to make a purchase
- The percentages you earn could be small
- The cashback offered might be small on some services
- Some cashback sites charge you to join
